Radworks™ WebViewer Software v5.1®

Looking at the hospital from an IT perspective, effective distribution of images and information will follow the trends in consumer electronics and move more and more towards Internet and intranet solutions.  Recognizing this, the WebViewer is based on the familiar user interface of Applicare's Radworks product line.

Combining Web technology and PACS provides various new combinations for distributing information, such as linking to the hospital's Internet site, making hot links to other sites in the hospital (lab site, cardiology site, medical database, etc.), thus improving the flow of information throughout the hospital and enabling all users to view image information.  The WebViewer can be considered to be one of the best medical imaging web products in the marketplace.  The product is based on ActiveX controls, which provide much better performance than the commonly used Java-based implementations.

Server and Clients

The WebViewer applications consists of a WebViewer Server license and (freely) downloadable WebViewer clients.  Downloading these clients and their installation is fully automatic.

DICOM Connectivity

The web server communicated with any DICOM 3.0 compliant database.  Connected to the server are clients that can be used anywhere in the Intranet environment.  The number of clients that can be active depends on the license agreement.  Site licenses are available.

Fast Access to Images

The Diagnostic or Review level software can be configured to send a set of key images to the WebViewer Server.  These images are then immediately available to users of the system, such as referring physicians.  The radiology department retains control over the image flow, although the system can be configured so that clients can perform a query on DICOM or databases on the network

Multiple servers can be installed for different users, such as a teaching server, MRI server, CT server, etc. or you can assign various partitions on the servers hard disk to such functions.

Working Off-Line

After downloading studies from the server, it is possible to work on them off-line.  Just select the option Work Off-line in your browser (File Menu), and you can continue to inspect the studies and image which remain stored in the browser cache on your local hard disk.  This option can save on costs when the user is connected to the server via a telephone line.

Security Issues

To prevent the flow of information outside the system, a firewall for the network is strongly advised.  The use of passwords will also add security to the system.  Data security is ensured through encryption during the data transfer.
